Rules for the 2011 Club Photo International Photo Competition

For queries regarding the competition rules, please contact clubphotointernational@unog.ch

1. GENERAL RULES

1.1 Participation is free of charge.

1.2 The competition will close on Tuesday, 23 November 2011. Entries received after that date will not be considered.

1.3 The competition is open to staff members of the UN system in Geneva, staff of Permanent Missions to the UN, accredited NGOs and members of the CPI.

2. THEME

Photos should highlight the beauty of trees or their value to society on a social, economic or environmental level. Whether they raise questions or provoke a feeling of appreciation for nature’s amazing diversity of shapes, sizes and colours, send in your best shots.

3. REGISTRATION AND SUBMISSIONS

3.1 Professional photographers are excluded from the competition.

3.2 For the purposes of this competition, we define a professional photographer as someone who makes a living from selling their photographs or who works as a photographer for either profit or non-profit organizations.

3.3 Registration: Participants must register on the CPI website (http://clubphotointernational.com) by filling in an electronic entry form. Participants may submit up to three photos and will be asked to provide the following information: name of photographer, organization, email, and the file name and title for each photo (see 3.4).

3.4 Submissions: After registering, participants should submit their photos electronically to the CPI email (clubphotointernational@unog.ch). To avoid exceeding the maximum message size limits associated with most e-mail accounts, we recommend using the service WeTransfer at https://wetransfer.com. The service is free and does not require registration.

4. MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS

4.1 Only digital photos, in colour or black and white, will be accepted.

4.2 All photos must have a minimum pixels dimension of either a 1600 pixels width and/or 1200 pixels height (approximately 3 megapixels) in a standard portrait or landscape aspect ratio. To find the pixels dimensions of an image, Mac users can control-click on an image and select Get Info from the pop-up menu. For PC users, right-click on an image file, select Properties from the pop-up menu, then select the Summary tab and click on the Advanced button.

4.3 Photo files must be submitted in JPEG format.

4.4 All photographs should accurately reflect the subject matter and the scene as it appeared. Photos that have been digitally altered beyond standard optimization (removal of dust, cropping, reasonable adjustments to exposure, color and contrast, etc.) will not be accepted.

4.5 All photos submitted must have been taken by the participant himself/herself.

4.6 Photos should neither violate the rights of a third party, nor contain offensive content.

4.7 Images must not be watermarked.

4.8 The organizers have the right to exclude photos if they do not conform to the above conditions.

5. JUDGING AND PRIZES

5.1 Judging will be conducted by the President of CPI and professional photographers.

5.2 Photos in colour and black and white will be judged in the same category.

5.3 Images will be judged on originality, technical excellence, composition and artistic merit.

5.4 Judging will be anonymous.

5.5 The jury will select six winning photos among those submitted and rank them from first place to sixth place.

5.6 The jury will also select the best photograph of each participant for an exhibition that will take place after the photo competition (see 6).

5.7 The jury’s decisions are final.

5.8 The results of the competition will be announced on the CPI website and participants will be notified by email. The six winning photos will be displayed on the website, as well as the photos selected for the exhibition.

5.9 The winning photos will also be published in UN Special.

6. EXHIBITION

An exhibition will be held in the Palais des Nations in early 2012. Participants will be asked to make a print of their selected photo in high resolution. Participants wishing their photo to be returned to them should provide a self-addressed stamped envelope.

7. COPYRIGHT

The copyright of submitted and winning photos will be owned by the participating photographers. The winning photos will be released for the “non-exclusive” use of CPI. Such use will be restricted to promotion, publicity, news, informational education or awareness usage relating to CPI. Competition photographers will be identified as the authors of the photos to which they will retain the copyright.
